I rarely get a letter these days, unless its from the Inland Revenue or the Gas board about my electricty bill. Its a shame. There’s something lovely about receiveing a handwritten note. It feels as if it has taken a bit more time and trouble than an email. It says “I have been arsed enough to get out a pen and some paper, and furthermore once I had finished the note I had to find a bloody envelope. Not only that but I had to locate your address! I’ve spent half a day writing this sodding note. What a total fag” Nevertheless, as far as I am concerned nothing shouts genuine apreciation more than a handwritten note. So, dear reader, it is for that reason that I will be sending a few copies of my new EP “Gazing Up From The Moon” to some of the people that helped me to make it. I will be getting out a proper pen and rummaging in my drawers (stop it) to find some paper. I will be expressing my gratitude and enclosing a copy of said CD. If you receive one I hope you realise that it means I truly value the contribution you have made. If you don’t get one it means one of three things;

1. I hate you

2. You had no bearing on the creation of “Gazing Up From The Moon”

3. I wanted to send you a note but I don’t have your address. Perhaps I’ll just send you an email….

Conversations With My Son - Part 1

Me - Tom, your fingernails could do with a clean, you should use a nailbrush?

Tom - No I shouldn’t

Me - You shouldn’t?

Tom - No, Jesus didn’t use a nailbrush did he, and he didnt have a bad life.

Me - Tom, he was crucified.

Tom - Yes well, apart from that.

A Rainy Night In Balham

Yes I know, it isnt quite Randy Crawford.

Last night I was fortunate enough to be part of a wonderful musical evening at The Bedford in Balham. My friend Dave Holmes was launching his new album “Raw” and he invited me along to play a few tunes to the assembled throng.

Its a fab little venue that looks like small version of the Globe Theatre. There were wonderful solo performances from Graham Dee and Sara Colman, followed by Dave and an all star band rocking their way through the tracks from his debut album. Dave played on my album and if ever there was indication of his quality it must have been the morning he turned up for the session whilst Sean (studio owner and engineer) was still clearing up and running the hoover round. I suggested we use the time taken up by Mr Sheen doing his stuff buy me teaching him a couple of new acoustic numbers to which I wanted him to add some tasteful twelve string. I played them through once and Dave said “lets record one and see what it sounds like” We did, and it was the take that’s on the album, for both songs! That’s a quality ear combined with a heap of creativity I can tell you.

So here’s to you Dave. I hope your own music is blessed in the same way you have contributed greatly to the rest of us over the years.

Oh and what the bloody balls happened to spring? It was bloody freezing out there. I was glad of my hat.

Vocal Booths Aren’t What They Used To Be

I’ve been recording. I spent a few delightful days in Glasgow working with Boo Hewerdine at Mark Freegard’s Kyoti studios. We had some great musicians along in addition to Boo. Kevin McGuire provided the electric and double bass, and Jim McDermott on drums. Its a real privelage to be able to work with such good musicians. Me? I ended up in the toilet. Apparently it’s a pretty good vocal booth and has been frequented by the likes of Eddi Reader in the past so who am I to quibble? I must confess to a few technical hitches though. I had great trouble stopping the body of the guitar from banging on the sink, and my arse was a numb as a cobbler’s thumb from sitting on the toilet for hours on end so I had to imrovise with a towel. I imagine it would have been significantly worse with the toilet seat cover up though. My legs would have gone to sleep and I’d have been hobbling around the studio like I’d been riding a horse for a week. We have to suffer for art you know, its not all glamour.
